чернослив - prunes (16th July 2011)

чернослив [cher-na-SLIF] (masculine noun) – prunes (dried plums)

Бабушка испекла пироги с черносливом. = Grandma has made prunes pies.

Это салат с черносливом и грецкими орехами. = This salad is made from prunes and walnuts.

 

The word "чернослив" comes from "чёрный" = black and "слива" = a plum.

Prunes are commonly used in Russian cuisine.
