перстень - a (signet) ring (30th August 2011)

перстень [PERS-ten'] (masculine noun) – a (signet) ring

Она получила в наследство от бабушки перстень с сапфиром. = She inherited a sapphire ring from her grandmother.

The word "перстень" is either used for a signet ring or for a ring with a gem on top. It isn't usually used for a plain ring.

The word comes from "перст", which used to mean "finger" in old Russian.
