чаща - depths of a forest (13th January 2012)

чаща  [CHA-shcha] (feminine noun) – the depths of a forest

Дети заблудились в чаще дремучего леса. = The children got lost in the depths of the dense forest.

The word comes from "частый" = dense, as we imagine "чаща" with very little space between trees and bushes.

Synonym: чащоба
