Word in focus

чувак  [choo-VAK] (masculine noun) – dude, man, guy

А кто этот чувак? Ты его раньше здесь видел? = Who is that guy? Have you seen him here before?

У тебя что, чувак, совсем крыша поехала? =  Dude, are you nuts?

« сахар - sugar (4th November 2011) | Main | работа - work, job (2nd November 2011) »

если - if (3rd November 2011)

если  [YES-li] (conjunction) – if

Если ты увидишь его, попроси его позвонить мне. = If you see him, ask him to call me.

У него будет хорошая зарплата, если он получит эту работу. = He'll have a good salary if he gets this job.

"Если" is only used in conditional sentences. It isn't used to report questions, for example, you WON'T use "если" in a sentence like "Ask him if he can come".

Unlike in English, we use the Future tense after "если".  For example, in English you would say "If I see him" (Preset) while in Russian you'd say "Если я увижу его" (Future).
