подушка - pillow (16th June 2011)

подушка [pa-DUSH-ka] (feminine noun) – a pillow, a cushion

Она положила голову на подушку. = She put her head on the pillow.

Эта подушка слишком мягкая. = This pillow is too soft.

It's possible that "подушка" comes from "под" (under) and "ушко" (affectionate form of "ухо" = ear), as we actually put it under our ear.

Подушка безопасности = an airbag
