светофор - traffic lights (1st July 2011)

светофор [sve-ta-FOR] (masculine noun) – traffic lights

Ты не заметил светофор? = You haven't noticed the traffic lights?

Этот светофор не работает. = These traffic lights are out of order.

 

The word "светофор" comes from "свет" = light, and a Greek word meaning "carrying", so literally it means "carrying light".

 

красный свет = the red light

зелёный свет = the green light

проехать на красный свет = to drive throught a red light

остановиться на красный свет = to stop at the red light
