свободный - free (15th July 2011)

свободный [sva-BOD-nyy] (adjective) – free

Мы живём в свободной стране. = We live in a free country.

Я искал свободное место в поезде. = I was looking for a free seat on the train.

 

Please, note that "свободный" is NOT used to say that you don't have to pay for something. In this case you use the word "бесплатный". Девушка дала мне бесплатный билет. = The girl gave me a free ticket. 

 

Свобода = freedom. Они борются за свободу. = They are fighting for freedom.
