варить - to boil (2nd August 2011)

варить / сварить [va-RIT'/sva-RIT'] (imperfective/perfective verb) – to boil (food)

Нужно сварить картошку. = We need to boil the potatoes.

Опустите макароны в кипящую воду и варите семь минут. = Put the pasta into the boiling water and boil for seven minutes.

Note that you don't use "сварить" while talking about liquids, like water or milk. In this case you use "вскипятить". Нужно вскипятить воду для чая. = We need to boil some water for tea.

However, we say "сварить суп" = to cook a soup.
